Last week a great rescue mission occurred in the Strandir region of Iceland's West Fjords as a 15-metre Blue whale beached itself on the shore of Hveravik bay. As the tide went out it was clear the whale was unlikely to be able to set itself free. So Icelanders, with their ever present hardiness and ingenious ways, set about trying to save this magnificent creature.
They went about tying a rope around the whale’s tail and after a 7 hour rescue mission, various vessels later and several attempts by the whale to drag the boats back to shore they managed to pull the Blue whale out to sea and in to Steingrimsfjord.
Why the whale decided to beach itself it unknown, but we can be happy in the knowledge it is now free and back in the wild where it rightly belongs.
If you would like to experience the beauty and magnificence of the wild marine life surrounding Iceland then look no further than our whale watching excursions. Observe and be amazed and you may be lucky enough to view a Blue whale, the largest animal on Earth.
