In this exciting Blog our intrepid Sales Executive Louise Codd shares some of her fond memories of her time living in Finland. If you are inspired by her story then why not consider a fantastic holiday in Finnish Lapland.
After living in Finland’s capital, ‘Helsinki’ for 9 months, and taking some valuable lessons in one of the hardest languages in the world, ‘Suomi’, I decided it was about time to explore the magical wilderness of Finnish Lapland.
With a pair of skis, snowshoes, a million pairs of socks, a couple of sausages, woollen gloves and a nice collection of thermal undies, I headed off by car, to Saariselka. After many hours of taking in the never ending scenery of Snowy Christmas trees and the odd wooden house, I’ll never forget, just as I was approaching the midway point of Oulu, a wave of green light floated above me, it was none other than the glow of the Northern Lights.
Gaining an appetite fast, I filled up with some very much needed rye bread and cheese (a Finnish delicacy) and headed further North, into a wilderness which was soon becoming isolated. But fret did I not as I was soon befriended by a herd of Reindeer, running through the forest giving me a very warm welcome into Lapland, or ‘Lappi’.
Eager to explore more, I strapped on my snowshoes and headed up the nearest mountain. The views were absolutely out of this world, not a being insight, I soon forgot the cold.
After completing my snow shoe course in record time, I decided to take part in
another popular sport in Finland, cross-country skiing. Unfortunately I wasn’t going fast enough for some locals, so I decided to take a short pit stop in a ‘Kota’ (Lapp hut), where I whacked out my sausages, otherwise known as ‘Makkara’, and had my very own BBQ with dashing of mustard. Heavenly!
Finland is a country filled with breathtaking scenery, ideal for a winter break, surprise getaway, romantic escape or a family treat.
